The Function of the Spleen in Dogs

The spleen is an important but often overlooked organ in dogs. It functions as both a blood filter and a storage organ, and also plays a key role in the immune system. Dogs can develop several types of spleen disorders.

The spleen is a dark red, elongated organ located in the abdominal cavity near the stomach. It has several essential functions:

  • Filtering blood: The spleen removes old or damaged red blood cells and other waste products from circulation.
  • Storing blood: It stores blood and iron, which can be quickly released in emergencies such as blood loss.
  • Immune system support: The spleen helps defend against infections by producing white blood cells and antibodies.
  • Blood cell production: In young dogs, the spleen assists in the formation of red blood cells.

A well-functioning spleen helps keep the blood clean, maintains oxygen levels, and supports immune balance.

Spleen Disorders

Common issues include:

  • Spleen tumors, benign or malignant (including hemangiosarcoma).
  • Ruptured spleen due to trauma or tumor rupture – a life-threatening emergency.
  • Spleen torsion or infarction, which cuts off blood supply and causes swelling.
  • Enlarged spleen, often caused by bacterial infections or blood diseases.

Symptoms

Symptoms can develop suddenly or gradually: fatigue, swollen abdomen, loss of appetite, pale gums, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, fever, weakness, or even collapse. If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Removing the Spleen

In cases of rupture, enlargement, or tumors, surgical removal is often necessary. Fortunately, dogs can live well without a spleen, as the liver and lymph nodes can take over part of its functions. However, they may tire more easily and be more prone to infections afterward.

Strengthening the Immune System with Clove Extract

The immune system is closely linked to the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which transmits vital signals between cells, influencing processes such as oxygen transport, nerve communication, and immune defense. Plant-derived cannabinoids from the clove plant can help support the ECS, thereby boosting your dog’s natural immunity.

Contemporary dogs are no longer exposed to extreme challenges to their immune system. They have a stable living environment indoors, receive sufficient and good food, have limited contact with unfamiliar (wild) animals, and are preventively treated against possible diseases. This may result in a weaker immune system for the dog, as they have little exposure to pathogens and the immune system is not triggered. But how can you ensure that your dog's immune system remains optimal?

How do you support your dog's immune system?

This may result in a weaker immune system for the dog, as they have little exposure to pathogens and the immune system is not triggered. But how can you ensure that your dog's immune system remains optimal?. Go outside! On a wet, stormy autumn day, this may not sound very appealing. But being outside is the best thing for your dog's immune system (and for ourselves as well). Outside, the dog comes into contact with bacteria, fungi, droppings from wild animals, and other dogs. The best way to optimize your dog's immune system is to expose them to as many "pathogens" as possible. This triggers the immune system to become stronger, making the dog more resilient when exposed to a serious virus...

Older dogs sometimes experience conditions like arthritis or cataracts. In this article, we discuss five disorders that every dog lover should be aware of.. Arthritis Arthritis in dogs is similar to what humans experience. Joints become swollen and inflamed, and movement becomes painful. Arthritis usually worsens with age. Inflammation can occur in all joints, but is most commonly seen in the knees, shoulders, and toes. There is no cure for arthritis, but omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce swelling and provide some natural relief. These healthy fats are found in sources like salmon oil. Cannabinoids and/or black cumin can also support your dog with...

Clove for dogs, what does that do?

Giving cloves to your dog might sound a bit strange. But it's actually quite logical. The clove plant produces strong cannabinoids. These substances help to keep your dog healthy, for example in case of joint problems. Cloves are therefore a good choice instead of CBD oil from cannabis.. Every mammal has an endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS was discovered about thirty years ago and consists of a system of receptors that exchange signal substances. This way, signals about the health and balance of the body are delivered to the right places. In short, the ECS monitors the physical and mental balance of an animal (or human) and ensures a good resistance to illness and external influences. A very important system, therefore, that influences a wide range of physical and mental co...
