Supporting Your Dog’s Liver and Kidneys
The liver and kidneys are vital organs for mammals. Both filter the blood and remove waste products. The liver also plays an important role in digestion, storing certain vitamins, and producing essential proteins. Healthy liver and kidney function is therefore crucial.

When your dog develops liver or kidney issues, you’ll often notice increased drinking and urination first. Other signs include poor appetite, weight loss, and blood in the urine. Yellow gums are a clear indicator of liver or bile duct problems.
Healthy Nutrition
Diet is one of the most important factors for supporting kidney and liver health. Choose high-quality food with easily digestible proteins and avoid excessive salt. For dogs with kidney problems, a special renal diet is recommended. These contain less protein and phosphate, reducing strain on the kidneys. Dogs with liver issues benefit from special diets rich in antioxidants like vitamins E and C, and low in copper. Always provide fresh drinking water, as dehydration puts extra pressure on the kidneys. Avoid human medications such as ibuprofen, pesticides, and foods toxic to dogs like chocolate and grapes.
Strong Immune System
Causes of liver and kidney issues include genetic predisposition, accidents, and infections. Viral or bacterial infections put additional strain on these organs, especially if they become chronic. A strong immune system is therefore key. Vaccination and deworming also help prevent parasites from damaging the liver and kidneys. Supplements like salmon oil or clove extract can further support immune health.
Detox for Healthy Dogs
Every day, your dog encounters substances that the liver and kidneys must process – from food, medications, or the environment. Stress can also generate waste products. A detox with specific herbs helps the body eliminate toxins more effectively, supporting the liver, gallbladder, and kidneys. Benefits include shinier coat, more energy, a stronger immune system, and better metabolism. Detox can be especially useful during shedding, after illness, or following stressful periods. Important: never give a detox when your dog is sick or has low resistance, as it requires extra energy!
A detox is useful:
- after medication, vaccination, or deworming
- in case of fatigue, itching, dull coat, or slow digestion
- as part of a preventative health routine
- during seasonal changes (spring or autumn)
Helpful herbs include turmeric (anti-inflammatory, kidney-protective), boldo (supports the liver, antibacterial), milk thistle (detoxifying), artichoke (improves digestion), and fennel (antioxidant). The best option is a liquid, well-absorbed extract combined with essential vitamins and minerals.
Annual Check-Up
Liver and kidney problems are often not noticed right away and may become chronic. That’s why annual check-ups are important, especially for older dogs and breeds predisposed to organ issues, such as Cocker Spaniels, Dalmatians, or Labrador Retrievers. Simple blood and urine tests can already provide valuable insights into organ health.
