There are different types of worms that can affect dogs. These parasites do not all enter the body in the same way. And good hygiene alone does not completely prevent your dog from getting worms. In most cases, worms develop when your dog ingests tiny worm eggs while licking its fur or sniffing the ground. Some types of worms are transmitted by biting or stinging insects such as flies, fleas, and mosquitoes.

Ingesting Worm Eggs

Dogs can ingest worm eggs by sniffing contaminated soil or the feces of other dogs or foxes. The worm eggs then develop into worms in the dog's intestines, which can cause issues like diarrhea. Roundworms and whipworms are transmitted in this way. Even mother’s milk can be a source of worm eggs—puppies can get hookworms through infected milk. However, these eggs can also enter through the skin and fur or through contact with fox feces.

Annoying Parasites

Other well-known worms in dogs are caused by insects. Tapeworms, for example, are transmitted by fleas and lice—not through bites, but when the dog swallows an infected flea or louse while scratching its own fur. Heartworms infect a dog through mosquito bites. The French heartworm, which also occurs in the Netherlands, enters a dog's body when it eats amphibians or snails.

Worm Prevention is Important

As you can see, it is nearly impossible to prevent your dog from coming into contact with worms. Most puppies are even born with a roundworm infection that they inherit from their mother! This is why it is crucial to control and prevent worms in dogs. Puppies must be dewormed regularly, and adult dogs should be given a topical treatment that protects against fleas, lice, and other parasites. Additionally, make sure your dog avoids sniffing the feces of other dogs or foxes as much as possible.
