Operation (American) Witch Hazel in Horses
The witch hazel is native to Canada and the northern United States, but has been brought to Europe as an ornamental tree. Witch hazel is known for its yellow flowers and can unfortunately cause allergy symptoms in people and animals sensitive to pollen. Native Americans used witch hazel branches as dowsing rods to find water and infusions of the leaves for external use on bruises and contusions.
Witch hazel is rich in tannins, flavonoids, and essential oils.
Internal use witch hazel
Witch hazel mainly affects blood vessels. It has a constricting function on small veins and capillaries and can therefore be used for swelling and bruises. It also helps stabilize blood vessel walls and has an antioxidant effect on blood vessel walls.
External use witch hazel
Witch hazel has anti-inflammatory and disinfectant properties and can therefore be used effectively on wounds and sprains.
