Sulfur (S) in horses
In all tissues, sulfur is present as an organic substance and can be found in the amino acids methionine and cysteine. Sulfur is very important for the hooves (keratin). It is involved in the formation of sulfur bridges in keratin. Keratin provides the unique strength of hooves while also providing flexibility. Keratin contains the highest amount of sulfur in the entire body.
Sulfur also plays an important role in metabolism and in antioxidant function.

Macro-mineral
Functions of sulfur in horses:
- Formation of sulfur bridges in keratin
- Antioxidant function
Sulfur requirements
Horses receive sufficient sulfur from plant materials, so supplementation is not necessary. Horses rarely have a sulfur deficiency. Sulfur (MSM sulfur) is often added to feed for tendon problems. Make sure it is a pure, organic sulfur. Industrial sulfur is poorly absorbed (85% loss).
