Functioning of manganese (Mn) in horses
Manganese is a trace element (micro-element) and is part of some enzymes. Other enzymes are activated by manganese as a cation (positively charged ion). The enzyme manganese-superoxide-dismutase (Mn-SOD) is stored in the mitochondria and in liver tissue, among others. Mn-SOD protects DNA from damage by superoxides. Manganese is therefore involved in antioxidant actions in the body.
