Functioning of cobalt (Co) in horses
Cobalt is the main component of vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin. Cobalt is involved in energy metabolism, but also plays a role in various other proteins and associated processes.
Most of the cobalt is found in muscles and bones, but the liver is where most of the metabolism of vitamin B12 takes place.
There has been little research done on the importance, function, and requirements of cobalt in horses. It is known that grass provides sufficient cobalt, straw is low in cobalt, and yeast is a good source of cobalt.
