Citronella for horses

Citronella is a natural oil obtained from the grass species cymbopogon nardus and cymbopogon winterianus. It is said to have insect-repelling properties and has therefore been found in various mosquito-repellent products (lotions, candles, etc) for decades.

Citronella as a mosquito repellent

The effectiveness of citronella depends strongly on the concentration, but also on the other ingredients in the product. There is no scientific evidence about the function and effectiveness of citronella. Often, horse owners prefer citronella over other chemical means due to its availability and non-harmful nature.

Studies have shown that mosquitoes initially stay away when citronella is used, but eventually, they may still strike. Citronella is also sometimes added as a flavoring agent.
