Black Cumin for Horses

The nutmeg flower, or black cumin, is an herbaceous plant with very powerful medicinal properties. Despite the name referring to cumin, black cumin has nothing to do with the kitchen spice cumin. In the kitchen, black cumin is also used as a flavoring agent, as it has a nutmeg-like taste when the seeds are roasted.

But black cumin is best known for its strong medicinal effects due to containing the substance thymoquinone, which has many health benefits for horses.

Choose a high concentration, not oil

There are various black cumin supplements available on the market for horses. However, most of them are black cumin oil, which is made by pressing the black cumin seeds. This process leads to the loss of many medicinal properties. Black cumin oil contains only a small percentage of thymoquinone, which is the most important substance in black cumin.

Choose a supplement that contains a high concentration (20 grams per liter) of thymoquinone for the greatest medicinal effect. A higher concentration of thymoquinone is not recommended, as it can be irritating to the respiratory tract.

Combination with cannabinoids enhances effectiveness

By combining black cumin with cannabinoids from cloves, the medicinal effect is enhanced. These two substances synergize with each other. Both substances work as anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents, and by combining them, the effect is more intense and quicker. In acute situations, it is recommended to give a combination of these two substances.
