Functioning of barberry in horses

The barberry is a shrub of which mainly the root and bark are used. Barberry is rich in alkaloids and is used as an appetite stimulant and stomach strengthening plant. It is also used for kidney stones and to drive out bile and urine.

A high dosage of the root is not recommended because of the high amount of alkaloids, it can also irritate the uterus in high doses.
