Astragalus (the membranous milkvetch)

Astragalus is a legume native to East Asia that falls under the same family as licorice and peas. The medicinal properties of this plant are found in the root.
It thrives in a dry, sandy, well-draining, slightly alkaline soil in full sun. Astragalus is a hardy plant with very strong and hard roots.

Many people are not familiar with Astragalus. Here in the Netherlands, it is also called 'membranous milkvetch'. However, this plant has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries and is especially known for its sweet and mildly warming effect. It was believed to improve immunity and strengthen life energy.
