What is a hoof abscess?

A hoof abscess is a localized collection of pus in the hoof caused by a bacterial infection. This abscess is located in the hard part of the hoof, which makes it difficult for the infection to drain. This creates significant pressure in the hoof, which can be extremely painful. Since the abscess has no natural exit, it must eventually break through somewhere. This is usually through the sole or the white line, but in some cases, a higher-placed hoof abscess may exit through the coronary band.

What to do in case of a hoof abscess?

It is often advisable to contact your veterinarian or farrier to confirm the diagnosis. A farrier is not allowed to cut into live tissue but is usually more experienced with hooves than a veterinarian. For this reason, you often see cooperation between veterinarians and farriers.

Based on the diagnosis, treatment can begin. This typically involves opening the area once the location of the hoof abscess is determined. If the location is not yet clear, it may help to soak the hoof in a solution like Biotex for a few days to soften the hoof, allowing the abscess to break through more easily. Once the abscess has been exposed, it needs to be kept clean. Discuss the appropriate treatment for your horse with your veterinarian or farrier to ensure proper care.

Clove is anti-inflammatory!

A useful product for horses prone to hoof abscesses is clove extract. It helps balance the body and has anti-inflammatory properties. It also supports the immune system and strengthens the horse’s resistance. However... suspect a hoof abscess and are you using a clove product? Stop using it immediately! You want the hoof abscess to break through, not linger. Once the abscess has broken through or been opened by the farrier, you can start using clove again. It will then help reduce inflammation and aid the horse in recovering quickly.

Frequent hoof abscesses?

Some horses are more prone to hoof abscesses, often due to issues with their hooves or immune system. Make sure your horse receives appropriate nutrition that is low in sugar and starch. Additionally, ensure the body is as clean as possible, for example, by using liquid nettle and dandelion supplements. Never give these horses a detox! A detox can actually trigger a hoof abscess in such cases.

Want to strengthen the hooves? Opt for hydrolyzed silicon, which is more effective than biotin and helps strengthen and fortify the hoof from the inside out.
