As is often the case, it depends. Do you want to prevent joint problems because you have a young dog or a breed that is more prone to conditions such as osteoarthritis or arthritis? Or do you have an older dog with chronic joint issues that you want to relieve from pain and stiffness? Choosing the right supplement – or a combination – should be tailored to each dog.

Building Block

Let’s start with silicon: this mineral supports the production of joint fluid, collagen, cartilage, and bone. It stimulates the body’s own production of glucosamine and chondroitin, supporting the development of a healthy skeleton. Silicon is essential for growing and active dogs. Always choose hydrolyzed, liquid silicon, as this is the most bioavailable form. For older dogs, silicon is also important to maintain skeletal health.

Fighting Pain and Inflammation

If your dog has trouble moving, takes time to get going, or limps, he is in pain. This may be caused by cartilage wear, reduced joint lubrication, or muscle pain from waste buildup. Uric acid crystals after heavy exertion can also lead to pain. While painkillers from the vet are an option, natural remedies can be very effective. The most well-known is devil’s claw, used for centuries as a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Research shows it works particularly well in combination with herbs such as boswellia, willow, and horsetail. Another option is clove. The clove plant contains cannabinoids, compounds important for nerve signaling. Clove reduces pain, calms inflammation, and helps restore balance in body, mind, and the immune system.

Supporting the Immune System

The immune system protects against harmful outside influences such as viruses and bacteria. If your dog often gets sick or has low resistance, cannabinoids from clove can help strengthen immunity – while also providing pain relief and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Removing Waste Products

Dogs with frequent muscle or joint pain after exertion may struggle to clear waste products effectively. Herbs such as blackcurrant, horsetail, and willow can support this process. Devil’s claw helps at the same time with pain and joint inflammation. Combined herbal extracts often have a stronger effect.

All Together?

Which supplements to use depends on the dog and the cause of the problem. Sometimes silicon alone is sufficient, in other cases clove or a mixed herbal extract may be better. Because herbs and minerals often complement each other, combining multiple supplements can be a smart approach – at least temporarily. Consulting with an expert can help determine the best combination for your dog.

Why does silicon work well for joint problems in dogs?

You have probably heard of the mineral silicon. Silicon is an important mineral for dogs. But why does it work so well when your dog has a joint problem? Like osteoarthritis or arthritis? We explain it in this article.. The main reason why silicon is so valuable for dogs with joint problems: it supports all parts of the skeleton and helps to strengthen the entire movement chain. Silicon does this in a natural way, namely by getting the body to work on its own. Essential mineral Silicon is an essential mineral. It helps the body in the production of synovium (joint fluid), collagen, cartilage, and bone. Not only the bones and cartilage, but also the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and ligaments need silicon. As a dog gets older, changes in the cartilage can occur. This is called arthritis. Wear and tear of the joints, lower production of joint fluid (lubricant), or local inflammation in the joints can cause pain and reduced mobility. In large dogs, this usually happens at a younger age than in older dogs. Some dog breeds may also be more sensitive to joint problems. Overweight dogs also place extra strain on their joints and bones. In older dogs, cartilage – which cushions the joints – becomes thinner, joint fluid decreases, and wear can occur. When cartilage thins, the bones rub against each other, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. This condition is known as osteoarthritis. Not only osteoarthritis but also arthritis can cause mobility problems in older dogs. Arthritis is characterized by swollen, inf...
