Devil’s Claw for Dogs: A Miracle Remedy for Pain?

The South African plant Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum spp.) has traditionally been used to relieve pain and inflammation – not only in humans but also in animals such as dogs and horses. It can be given long-term and is safe at the right dosage. Scientific research has shown that devil’s claw has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It also helps balance the immune system and supports liver function. Most commonly, it is used for joint problems – and its effectiveness for these issues has been widely studied and proven.
Devil’s Claw for Dogs
In dogs, devil’s claw can be used for arthritis, lameness, stiffness, and osteoarthritis. Studies have shown that it even improved bone formation in dogs receiving this supplement. Devil’s claw also acts as an antioxidant, helping flush out waste products that accumulate in muscles and joints during activity. Research also found healthier cartilage in dogs treated with devil’s claw.
Synergy
Devil’s claw positively affects the entire musculoskeletal system: bones, cartilage, muscles, and tendons. Research indicates that root extracts are more effective than isolated compounds, suggesting that multiple active ingredients contribute to its benefits. The same applies when combined with other medicinal plants: studies show that devil’s claw combined with plant-based cannabinoids and boswellia produces strong positive effects. Willow and horsetail can also support its action.
Safety
Devil’s claw is commonly used for osteoarthritis because of its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects. It is considered safe and can be used long-term. However, it should not be given during pregnancy or lactation. Dogs with liver problems should only receive it under veterinary advice. Liquid extracts are the most bioavailable form.
Chronic Relief
Conditions such as osteoarthritis and arthritis often cause chronic pain in dogs, significantly reducing their quality of life. Recent research shows that supplements containing devil’s claw and other herbs can greatly improve dogs’ comfort and activity levels. Devil’s claw is not a miracle cure, but it works even better in combination with other plants. The interaction with cannabinoids is still being studied, but the benefits of combined herbal supplements are clear. This is why devil’s claw and similar plants are increasingly considered before resorting to pharmaceutical painkillers in dogs with joint problems.
